I have the great pleasure of being aloud into our local Middle School every Wednesday to have lunch with 7th and 8th grade students. I go on Wednesday’s because our 7th and 8th grade ministry takes place on Wednesday nights. This year I started going to 6th grade lunch for two reasons: 1. I got to know some of them last year because my wife taught 5th grade 2. Hopefully they will be in my ministry next year.
I must admit I actually enjoy going to lunch there. There are always those students that are a little embarressed that I am there, but for the most part I am enthusiastically invited to sit down with them and talk. By doing this I have met many students I did not know already and some have started coming to our ministry.
For many this might seem like a drag, but this is one of the highlights of my week. I get to spend time with students on their turf(if you can consider school their turf) and they get to see me somewhere else besides church.
If you are doing student ministry make this a priority. There are so many good things that come from this. I have gotten to know secretaries, teachers, and adminstrators. Take a chance and you might even enjoy it.
