One of my greatest fears: a recession on truth

Two days ago I caught the tail end of an interview on the Today Show discussing the recent article in the New York Times on John McCain.  I was struck by this statement made by the one being interviewed, “Most people would rather be wrong, than scooped.”

If this is true then things like “facts” and “truth” really are not high on the priority list of “news” reporters.  But for most of you this is not new, I can not tell you how many times I have been watching the “news” and seen a very blatant stance taken and commentary given as if it was part of the news story.

But today I work with some students that see “truth” as an option not as a value.  What happens to a culture that does not value “truth” at its most simple form?
